Don’t mind me, I’m just causually appriciating how much I adore canon artwork.
First off, Takahashi actually can draw. People seem to think that because the manga is so stylized, he has no grasp of “proper art.” WRONG. Observe the flawlessness.
What I really feel like mentioniong though, is how perfectly this picture shows the canon character personalities. Yami Marik and Marik are different, yet connected. Yami Marik was created out of fear and anger and his initial purpose was to be a mental (and to some extent physical) barrier between Hikari Marik and his father. I love that this picture shows that through body language. Further more, Yami Marik’s obvious coruption and maddness and general lack of a complete soul shows in the most subtle ways. I mean, look at the difference in the Mariks’ eyes. I also think it says a lot about the two that they feel the need to wear different clothing. Marik LIKES his unusual, yet cheerful clothing. I assume he wears his rather odd choice of clothes because for once in his life, he gets to choose something for himself. Yami Marik, on the otherhand, finds Mariks ridiculous top not to his liking and actually bothers to pause his evil takeover long enough to change his ensamble to something darker and more intimidating. I think intimidation is the key here. (In this picture, the only difference in attire is the hoodie and the cape. Marik is wearing the tank top underneath. However, in the anime, and i believe, the manga as well, Marik starts off in only the hoodie and black pants, then transforms. Yami Marik then switches to the black top and kakis. THEN, Marik’s astral projection wears this outfit during the finale duel. I think.)
Anyway, the thing I love THE MOST about this picture? Marik has the dagger to Yami Marik’s back. Because that’s the canon personality. Yes, Yami Marik is a protecter of a sort (and hell yes, the body language here NAILED IT), but he is sick and mad and has no capasity for love, empathy, or even friendship. To my knowledge, he doesn’t even form any alliences. Just look at the way these two duel. It’s completely self destructive. Marik knows his Yami is wrong and shouldn’t exist. In everyway, he has to kill off the parasite and monster that is Yami Marik.
(Another thing, which isn’t as evident here as it is in the anime, is how Yami Marik always strains Marik’s body. Ever muscle is pushed to it’s limits. The viens are visible through the skin. I bet, if the series went more in depth, his heart would be pounding as hard and as fast as it can without killing him. Just further proof of Yami Marik going against nature and all that.)
So canon artwork, kudos for being awesome.
